Well... this isn't really about the characters in Furuba, but it's sort of related. It's my story about this one character I roleplay on the Furuba Forums, Kane Sohma. The forums are temporarily down and so I wrote this story to keep me occupied in the mean time. I have it in several parts (its not finished yet, I just keep updating it though) because that's the way I post it on my lj. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. ;D
Part One:
Kane awoke with a start, courtesy of his 9-year old brother, Kaemon, nearly tackling him in his sleep.
“Nii-san!” Kaemon shouted joyfully at Kane, nearly bursting his eardrum, “Time for school!” Kane groaned and turned over, but Kaemon was relentless. He pulled the covers off the bed and tickled the bottoms of his feet.
“AIIEEE!” Kane jumped about three feet in the air while his little brother giggled. “You do know it’s Sunday Kaemon!” He shouted, immediately regretting it after seeing his brother’s mournful pout.
“But… on Sundays, father…” he trailed off. That was true. Maybe they should get out early before their father woke up with a hell of a hangover. He was more vicious than usual then. And if they did spend the day out of the house, their father would take it out on just him and he could save Kaemon from him.
It had all started when he was born really. Being one of the cursed Zodiac (the rabbit), his mother had rejected him as a baby and killed herself as soon as Kaemon was born. His father was always drunk and beat him and his brother for as long as he could remember. Most of the times though, he could save Kaemon from the beatings, or at least the worst of them. It’s just that he is so much smaller and younger and Kane was afraid that he would be scarred by it. He would have taken his brother and run away years ago, but he knew he couldn’t support them on his own. He wouldn’t be able to get a job that paid nearly enough at 17. And the rest of his family… well… he was a Sohma, so he couldn’t bring shame to the family name (plus, most would probably be afraid of what his father would do if they took his sons away from him.) But no doubt one of his father’s siblings would take them in in a heartbeat if they knew what was going on at their house. After all, that is where Kaemon and him spent most of the time when they escaped. Just one more year though… then they could leave and he could give his brother a new life.
((I am going to post the parts seperately, because otherwise there will be too much text))

Part Two:
Kane got dressed as fast as he could and he left the house with Kaemon as quietly as possible, lest they wake their father and ruin the whole purpose of the escape. He couldn’t get over the obvious fear shining in his brother’s eyes as they snuck out. He silently vowed to himself again to protect his brother and get them out of this place as soon as possible.
They arrived at their Aunt’s house to find her gone, a fact which Kane was glad of; he didn’t trust his Aunt after he tried to tell her about their father. After a particularly harsh beating, Kane had taken Kaemon and run to his Aunt’s house. He showed her his bruises and tried to explain what was happening, but his Aunt didn’t understand. Her face turned white and she slapped him.
“Don’t ever speak that way about otuoto-san again!” She screamed at him. After that, he was a little hesitant about coming to his Aunt’s house, but he chose that as the lesser of two evils. His Aunt never brought it up again (he was smart enough not to either) and so Kane and Kaemon were free to enjoy her house as a place of refuge.
His cousin, Hoshi, a year older than Kane, greeted them at the door along with his two younger sisters, Nariko (14), and Kikyou (8). Kaemon immediately ran off with Kikyou to go play games in the make-believe world of innocent children, while Kane stood glaring down his cousin Hoshi in the doorway. As kids, the two had gotten along fairly well, but a few years before Kaemon was born, there was an incident that left them as lifelong rivals. Kane unconsciously rubbed the tattoo on his right wrist as he thought about it.
Hoshi sneered at him, “Father doing well, I presume?” he asked mockingly. Nariko looked away, her long black hair hiding her face, embarrassed by her brother.
“Cut the crap, Hoshi” Kane replied, pushing past his cousin into the house. He never missed an opportunity to remind Kane of his painful situation at home. But Kane could care less; as long as he was being offered solace there, he didn’t care what the hell his cousin said to him.

Part Three:
Kane strolled into the house, not turning back to look give Hoshi a second glance. If he had he would have seen Hoshi’s fist coming at his face and maybe would have had enough time to duck. Instead, Kane took the blow to his temple and fell to the floor.
He awoke in Nariko’s room, groggy and confused. After a few seconds however, he realized what had happened and enraged, sat up, pulling back the sleeves of his shirt,
“I’m going to kill him!” he shouted, hands clenching into fists.
“Please! Not so loud” Nariko begged him, forest-green eyes pleading. “Hoshi will hear you”
“Good.” Kane replied, but lowered his voice after seeing the fear in Nari-chan’s voice. “Does he hurt you?” Kane asked
“Oh…no.” She replied, almost defensively. “It’s just… I don’t want you getting more hurt.” As she glanced at the bruises on Kane’s arms, he realized that a lot more people knew the truth about his father than he thought. Even though he tried to hide it by wearing clothes with long sleeves and pants. He would have to be careful, lest someone find out and ruin his plan for next year’s escape.
“Hey, don’t worry about me” Kane said with an arrogant smile, “That’s the one reason your brother can’t stand me any more: I’m better than him.” He swung his feet over the edge of the bed and walked out the door.

Part Four:
“Wait—” Nariko grabbed his arm. As she did so, the sleeves of her kimono fell away and her tattoo was visible. Kane looked at it in disgust,
“So. You’re one of us too?” He asked, tracing the pattern with his finger. After he had touched all the lines, it glowed faintly green. “Earth.” Nariko looked at the floor, unable to meet his eyes.
“I had to.” She said so softly he had to lean even closer to her to hear, “He said that if I didn’t… he would make Kikyou kill her. I didn’t want—” Kane’s hands clenched into fists in silent rage. He had known that Hoshi was slightly…well, crazy, but to go this far? Forcing his sisters to…
It was called dark magic for a reason. He and his two cousins all had the tattoo. The shapes were all the same, but the elements differed. His was Thunder, Hoshi’s Fire, and Nariko’s Earth. You didn’t get to pick your element either; you drew the symbol and it picked you. But it wasn’t the tattoo that gave you the magic. It signified nothing… unless you killed someone. The more people, the more magic and therefore the more powerful you would get. Years ago, when they were friends, Hoshi had performed the rite for Kane. Hoshi had told him it was goat’s blood he was using. He didn’t find out until later that he had killed someone for it. After that, well… he used his magic in some situations, but he didn’t really like to. Because he couldn’t stop thinking about the price that someone had paid for his benefit. Judging from as much power as he had now, Hoshi must have killed at least a dozen people. He would have to be careful.
After that day, he and Hoshi became sworn enemies. Kane didn’t think that he would have the gall to do the same to his sisters. He guessed he had figured that as insane as Hoshi was, he still had family loyalty. He was wrong. And Nariko had paid the price. How many more people would have to suffer on account of Hoshi’s arrogance? If he could help it, none. But what could he do to stop him? Or at least to help his family? Because what was there stopping him from killing him next for more power, or… Kaemon?
That's all I have written now, but I have lots more ideas, so there will be more to come! Please let me know what you think. XD

Next part... sorry for it taking so long, but I had trouble writing the last scene; I wasn't sure how I wanted it to go.
Kane ignored Nariko and stormed downstairs, fully prepared for a match with his cousin. He had had enough of Hoshi’s manipulation and god-complex. He just couldn’t play around with people’s lives like that! What gave him the right?! So absorbed was Kane in his silent rant that he nearly collided with his aunt coming down the stairs. She greeted him fairly warmly (Kane had always been wary of her since he tried to talk to her about his father) and asked if he and Kaemon would be staying for dinner. Kane politely declined, suddenly overcome with an enormous desire to escape… from Hoshi, this house, his family… Since only the first two were possible, he collected his brother and left hastily.
Kaemon was hesitant about leaving, but careful not to voice these qualms until they had left. “Where are we going to go now? What are we going to do?” he inquired. Kane shut his eyes then looked to the sky in despair and hope for some sort of solution; he hadn’t really thought that far ahead.
“Ah… dinner!” He said excitedly, as though he had figured out an answer to some unsolvable math problem. “My treat.”
They returned home a few hours later after running out of places to go. All they could do now was pray that their father wasn’t home yet, or maybe asleep. Unfortunately, they weren’t so lucky.
Their father was incensed when they came in (Why? Kane guessed he was probably drunk.) He advanced on them, murderous rage in his eyes. Kane felt Kaemon beside him, shaking with fear. But Kane stood strong, only the fear in his heart betraying the brave façade. He met his father’s eyes, “Kaemon has some homework to finish up” he lied. He turned toward his brother, afraid he wouldn’t catch on—or take the escape. “Go to your room and finish it” he said, voice emotionless. The fear in Kaemon’s eyes was now for his brother; he opened his mouth to protest. “Go!” Kane hissed through clenched teeth. This time, he listened.
His father took off his belt, holding it menacingly in his hands: “You should be home for dinner!” he slurred at his son “I was going to make dinner and we could’ve eaten like a family again!” Kane doubted dinner was ever on his father’s mind, except perhaps while eating it himself, but remained silent. Finally, his father got tired of trying to get a reaction from Kane and charged toward him, belt whipping in anticipation. Kane bent over and took all the blows in silent defiance, which seemed to make his father even more enraged… But Kane would not give him that satisfaction. Finally, his father had his fill; Kane thought he glimpsed… was it regret? in his eyes. But he couldn’t be sure… all that was on his mind was getting to his bed, and the stinging fire in his back and legs.
Sorry for that anti-climactic bit... I couldn't figure out how I was going to write a confrontation between Kane and Hoshi. Though the way this is going, that will be eventually inevitable I think. Let me know your thoughts. ^__^
Also... here's a poll kind of question for you: I know I haven't done much with the other characters (this is Kane's story after all... though when it's finished I might re-name it, and there will be more of the others later) but, other than Kane, who is your favorite character? Just because I'm curious and there's a bunch of different plot lines I could develop, so I was just wondering who (or what) you would like to see more of.
I was also planning on doing maybe a childhood story-- like of Kane and Hoshi maybe, or a bunch of them, because I'm not sure how much longer this is going to go, but I love my characters! So... any ideas from readers (Naru!) would be greatly appreciated!
